Veterans law governs the rights and benefits available to military veterans, such as healthcare, disability compensation, pensions, education, housing, employment, and other benefits. Some specialized areas of Veterans law includes military discharge upgrades and advocacy for veterans’ rights across various legal and policy issues. Ultimately, veterans law aims to ensure that those who have served their country receive the support and recognition they earned with their sacrifice and service.

Through our Veterans Law Project, LSNV is assisting Northern Virginia’s low-income, at-risk, and homeless Veterans in accessing their earned Veterans benefits and removing barriers to housing, employment, and self-sufficiency within their communities. 2015.

The Work of the Veterans Law Project includes

  • Direct representation in pursuing military discharge upgrades and Department of Veterans Affairs character of discharge determinations.
  • Incorporated with LSNV’s Pro Bono Project to refer appropriate cases to private pro bono attorneys for specialized representation.
  • Working with Virginia’s Law School’s Veterans Clinics to offer students a range of volunteer opportunities, and to coordinate service delivery to eligible Veteran clients.
  • Coordination with community partners including VA hospitals, VA clinics, Vet Centers, Veteran Service Organizations and other Veterans focused providers.

The Veterans Law Project is currently a Department of Veterans Affairs Legal Services for Homeless Veterans and Veterans At-Risk for Homelessness (LSC-H) Grant Program funded project and was established in 2015.
