How Do I Apply?

In order for us to determine whether we can help you, you must be screened for eligibility.

Legal Services of Northern Virginia provides free civil legal assistance to the region’s low-income and neediest populations.  We do not assist in criminal, traffic, or immigration matters.

To determine whether we will be able to help with your legal problem, a member of LSNV’s intake team will have to complete an eligibility screening to see if you qualify.  Before explaining your legal issue, you will be asked some basic questions about your personal information, such as your name, address, and birth date.  You will also go through a financial eligibility screening.  If you qualify financially, we will discuss your legal issue to see if it is the type of legal issue that LSNV can help with.  If LSNV can help, you will be scheduled for a consultation to speak with an LSNV staff or volunteer attorney.  Please note that LSNV cannot guarantee in-court representation for your case.  If we cannot assist, we may be able to provide contact information for other organizations that can help.

There are three ways to apply for services:

ONLINE:    Our online application will give us your essential information to make the application process more efficient,  but you will still need to speak to an intake paralegal to complete the application. Our online application is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

BY PHONE:   We accept requests for assistance by telephone (703-778-6800) from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and from 1:30 pm. to 3:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Telephone intake is not available on Wednesday and Friday.

IN PERSON:    Many of LSNV’s offices are now open for in-person applications on Wednesdays for Walk-in-Wednesday.  For locations and hours, please navigate to the “Contact Us” page.
